Attention mini chefs! Register now for a kid’s cooking class over Feb. vacation at Patty’s Kitchen!

Have a mini-chef in the house? Foster their passion with cooking classes!

Patty Gardner, local mom and chef extraordinaire, offers cooking classes for kids ages 8+ in her Millbury home. We had a chance to catch up with Patty recently to find out more about her and what she offers.

For what age groups do you offer kids’ cooking classes?
Kids classes are a minimum age of 8-14 years old (although I’ve had older children sign up).

Do the kids eat what they make during the class?
The kids spend the class prepping and cooking and then sit down at the end of class to eat what they’ve prepared. Any leftovers are theirs to take home!

What kids’ cooking classes have you had in the past?
I like to challenge the children so I try to add classes that are interesting, but also kid-approved! The most popular past classes have been my Mexican and Handmade Pasta classes.

What types of “hands-on” cooking is included?
Because the class size is limited to six students, it really is a hands-on experience. We go over safety rules at the beginning of class and there are always demos on how to properly use any of the equipment before the kids touch anything. We make full use of the kitchen stove/oven/appliances with supervision at all times. I require the kids to wear a cut-glove anytime they are handling a knife.

What’s it like for you cooking with kids versus adults?
I have to admit, most times the kids are easier to teach than the adults. It’s hard to break old habits and easier to train someone to do things the proper way from the beginning. Also, the kids are really into it and it they bring a lot of fun and inspiration into the kitchen!

What upcoming classes do you have available for kids?
During the summer, I have a lot of kids classes available. In the winter, I mostly focus on adult classes but tend to schedule kids classes over any school breaks or holidays. I have a class on MLK day and four classes during February break. I also host kids’ birthday parties if someone is looking for a unique experience for their birthday boy or girl!
